A Beloved Game Show Host in the Battle of his Life

The career of one of the most well-known hosts in television history may be coming to a close soon. Alex Trebek, the host of the game show Jeopardy, opened up about his pancreatic cancer, and he has been struggling to maintain a good performance whilst hosting. In an article on Time.com titled, “'I'm Not Afraid of Dying.' Jeopardy! Host Alex Trebek Opens Up About Renewed Cancer Treatments”, Trebek mentions, “I talk to the producers about this all the time now. I say, ‘Look, I’m slurring my words. My tongue doesn’t work as well as it used to,'” he said. “The chemo has caused sores inside my mouth. It makes it difficult for me to speak and enunciate properly”. Although the producers of the show don’t notice anything about Trebek’s presentation, he still is preparing to leave the show.

I think that Alex should try his best to remain on the show until his abilities to perform are diminished enough to the point where it is too harmful to the show to keep him on. This situation is very depressing for both Alex and his family as well as his fans and people who have known and admired him for decades.

In the end, it is all up to Trebek on whether or not he continues his career throughout his struggle with cancer. If he wants to keep doing his job, he should be able to, but if he decides that this disease is too harmful to his performance, then it is perfectly understandable that he takes time off. Either way, we should respect his decision and not harass him in any way. It is great that Trebek has remained mostly positive throughout this monumental period of his life. He states, “I’m not afraid of dying,” and, “I’ve lived a good life, a full life, and I’m nearing the end of that life… if it happens, why should I be afraid of that?”.

I think that Alex has the perfect mindset in accordance with his disease. He is staying positive and is getting closer in his pursuit of survival. I hope he will be able to stay on TV for as long as he can since he has been apart of so many people's lives, and the television world just wouldn’t be the same without their favorite host. I grew up watching Alex Trebek on Jeopardy, and if his career comes to an end, I would be sad but he has also lived a great, fulfilling life that everyone is proud of him for. The fact that he is still hosting Jeopardy at the age of 79 is outstanding, so even though it’d be a shame to see him go after all we’ve seen from him, we should still applaud him for the absolute legend he has created in the television world. What do you think about the problem Alex is facing? Be sure to comment your opinions on what you’d think would be the best to do in this situation!
